Hay shows Walkers are Welcome

We have joined this innovative community-led scheme, to demonstrate our commitment to making your visit an enjoyable one.

Hay-on-Wye is one of three local towns (the others being Crickhowell and Talgarth) achieving WaW status in 2012.  WaW has the potential to deliver many exciting possibilities for Hay - activities undertaken by other communities include training for local guides, footpath and signage improvements, walking initiatives such as Walking for Health and Nordic walking, access improvements (for example ramps, gates, wheelchair friendly picnic tables), litter picking events, walking/photo/art competitions and dozens of other worthwhile projects.

To join Walkers are Welcome we had to meet 6 conditions:

  1. Demonstrate local support by collecting signatures on a petition.
  2. Formal endorsement of our application by the local Hay-onWye council.
  3. Hay Tourism Group are making a commitment to ensure that paths in the town/village are walked at least once a year and to report on the footpaths. Also that efforts are taken to extend the opportunities for walking in the Hay-on-Wye area.
  4. Display signage of our Walkers are Welcome status. This will be one of our tasks for this year.
  5. Encourage walkers to use public transport.
  6. Demonstrate of mechanisms in place to maintain Walkers are Welcome status.

If you want to help us in any way to maintain our WaW status please get in touch with Hay Tourism Group or if you want to find our more about the Walkers are Welcome scheme.
