The 3rd Hay Walking Festival is taking place from Thursday 10th – Monday 14th October 2013. We have a programme of 48 walks over 5 days, with a mix of short and long walks each day, plus some family friendly walks, and more themed walks – foraging, geology, archaeology , local history and ancient churches. There are opportunities to learn new techniques or to polish up rusty skills including map reading, navigation and nordic walking, and for the first time we are offering a beginner's session on mountain walking - in heart of the beautiful Llanthony valley. You can learn how the Alexander technique will help to improve your posture when taking to the hills, and pick up tips on sketching outdoors. We have many more longer walks this year, including one 20 miler, on Sunday 12th October - definitely not for the faint hearted! And there will be a few local classic walks, including the Brecon Beacons Horseshoe - again a new addition for this year.We are launching the 2013 programme on Friday 12th July. make a note in your diary and get booking - last year many walks were fully sold out well before the weekend.See you in October!

There are four walks ranging from 3.5 to 8 miles in length, all designed to showcase the wonderful scenery around Hay-on-Wye. There's also a family walk for your children and you to discover how to forage for food.

Hay on Wye is well known as the town of books and home to the large annual literary festival.
It is also a wonderful centre for walking, with easy access to the Brecon Beacons National Park, Offa’s Dyke Trail, the Black Mountains, the Wye Valley, the Golden Valley and the Black & White Villages of Herefordshire.
The 2nd Hay Walking Festival which took place from 11th – 15th October 2012 was a resounding success – with double the number of walks and double the number of tickets sold from our first year in 2011. Apart from one rather wet day on Thursday, even the weather worked in our favour with a brilliantly sunny weekend. We were pleased to welcome many people back for their second year, including a good number of visitors from outside the area who stayed in local accommodation and enjoyed all that Hay had to offer away from the hills in the evenings. Feedback was very positive, with people clearly valuing the opportunity not just to walk but to learn more about different aspects of the area. The foraging walks were particularly well received, as were those walks ending with tea or in a pub ! We were pleased to have very positive feedback from Walk Leaders too ( all of whom are volunteers ) so much so that they all seem prepared to do the same, or something similar, next year…..
